Natural beauty surrounds you in the canyon beneath the Caprock Escarpment. Caprock Canyons State Park is located a few miles from Quitaque, TX (pop 400). Nearby towns include Turkey, TX (pop 400) and Silverton, TX (pop 750), an area known for cotton farming and raising cattle.
This Texas State Park should be on your bucket list. Scenic beauty is unparalleled, there are many hiking and equestrian trails, the Texas State Bison Herd is located here, and a large Prairie Dog town is fun to watch. It is isolated, rarely crowded, has lakes, picnic tables, RV parking and camping in several areas. It is equal to or better than its big sister to the west, Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Canyon, TX.
My suggestion would be to visit both state parks during one trip. Consider staying at Hotel Turkey in Turkey, TX for a rustic small town atmosphere (we did!). Another great choice would be the Hudspeth House B&B in Canyon (stayed there too). Either gives you access to these two great parks within reasonable driving distance.
The bluest skies and darkest nights to view stars will also add to your journey. Fantastic get away in the Panhandle of Texas.
